OPEN UP complete bike Campagnolo EKAR group with HED wheelset and ENVE cockpit in gray matt
FAST, FUN, FREEDOM
The first UP to combine road bike speed and all-round capabilities to open up a whole new category. Now original UP features like dual wheel size compatibility and a lowered chainstay are the standard for performance gravel bikes.
The third generation UP & UPPER frames are lighter, more maneuverable and more fun than ever. They also pass our ultimate test: we only offer frames that we want to ride ourselves.
And because we “work hard to stay small,” you always speak directly to the people who developed the bikes.
WHAT IS THE UP(PER)?
With road tires it is a very fast racing bike
With large road/cross/gravel tires (32-40mm), it is an all-round bike that is perfect for riding on mixed surfaces and most gravel routes
With 650b mountain bike tires it is unstoppable on very difficult terrain and much faster than you would expect on asphalt thanks to the road position
So the position allows you to get out of the city and get to the gravel/dirt/trails quickly (unlike a mountain bike). Space for large tires allows you to tackle any route (unlike a racing bike). And you can do that with one type of tire for everything, or refine your ride with multiple sets of wheels or tires.
DROPPED CHAIN STAY
Probably the most copied feature of the original UP, but still few fully understand why and how to optimize this.
The chainring(s), frame, and tires all fight for space directly behind the bottom bracket. Mountain bikes (and some gravel bikes) solve this with a wider crank, but that hurts your pedaling posture (Q-factor) and therefore your pedaling efficiency.
Instead, we drop the right chainstay to move it out of this crowded area, making it wider and therefore stiffer (twice as wide gives eight times more stiffness!)
SPEED & HANDLING
Most riders know that with the right bike geometry, even big tires can be fast. The WI.DE. takes this to the extreme. Of course, a solid tire isn't as fast as a pure road tire, but the delta is small enough not to affect the fun on the road. And off-road there is no comparison.
Handling is equally important as we have a good reputation to protect.
The WI.DE. maintains its agility with everything from massive mountain tires to street tires.
TRCinTRS™ TECHNOLOGY
Forget “100% Hi-Modulus Aerospace Carbon.” It's not about high or low modulus, it's about the right carbon in the right place (or TRCinTRS™ as we call it).
Fact: Stiffer carbon is more brittle. So it's great for stiffness (on the sides of the downtube), but bad for shock loading (e.g. around the head tube).
Therefore, the best layup is a mix. We strategically place ultra-high modulus carbon (very stiff) where we can and harder grades of carbon where we need to. This makes our frames both lightweight and durable.
U-TURN
Our U-Turn fork has always had tremendous tire clearance, making it the perfect complement to the WI.DE. It is also very light thanks to another OPEN innovation: Smartmount. Smartmount attaches the brake caliper directly to the fork without an adapter. The mounts are preset for 160mm discs (the only sensible choice for gravel bikes). Lighter, cleaner, stiffer and safer. Check the specifications for more details on fitting each brand of caliper.
“PORTABLE CAPACITY”
As your Wide Detours get longer, you'll want to take more stuff with you without it becoming bulky. This allows you to mount an additional bottle under the down tube and a tool box under the bottom bracket, ideal for stability. The tool box mounts are off-center to create additional distance to the chainring. If you are not using a toolbox, you can mount a larger water bottle under the downtube.
The WI.DE. is also designed to accommodate a (strapless) top tube bag as well as saddle, handlebar and frame bags for longer high-speed adventures.
WIRE.STAYS
Vertically thin chainstays and seatstays provide compliance, while their lateral width and placement ensure rock-solid propulsion. Truly the best of both worlds.
FLAT DOWN TUBE
The down tube provides rigidity and connects the steering center to the drivetrain. The flat sides place strips of ultra-high modulus carbon where it matters most.
ZERO SETBACK SEAT TUBE
A zero-offset seatpost is lighter and more efficient, so we designed our seat tube angle so that most riders can use a zero-offset seatpost instead of a seatpost.
INTERNAL MANAGEMENT
Internal cables and hoses stay clean and protected and honestly look better. Our MultiStop design accepts 1x, 2x, mechanical, Di2 and eTap.
CONTINUOUS THREAD
The locking bolt secures the hanger into the frame with the same threads that secure the thru axle on the other side. Simpler, lighter & optimized for the stiffest thru axles: Syntace X-12.
SMART MOUNT 160
Flatmount calipers attach directly to the fork and frame and are positioned for 160mm discs. No front or rear adapters/spacers required.
